Bonnet release return spring

Help, when opening 1999 SL bonnet the hand lever does not return causing the bonnet not to close and heavy handed mechanics pressing down hard on bonnet leaving dents - "was there before Guv"
Is the return spring located at the hand lever end or bonnet end please?

Most of these bonet release handles need pushing back after you have pulled it, my SL was like that.there is no spring the handle end.
