I see some guys are proud that their list of mods includes replacing the star for the badge.

Why would you? :?:?:?

Not sure that I understand this question, are you saying that people remove the silly sticky up item for the flush badge?

I was always led to believe that only sports models have the flat badge, although that one fails when you realise that the Sprinter Van has a badge AND its fits perfectly on a model 107 SL.

On a personal level I prefer the badge because I dont like looking down the bonnet over the star when driving, but that is only a personal preference.

ah - so they try and look like the sportier models by not having the star... ok.

I thought some considered the "silly sticky up item" to be a status or feel-good symbol.

Perhaps removing the 'silly stick up thing' gains an important aerodynamic advantage. But I really like it - the twinkle in sunshine, the black silhouette at night - fantastic :)

I saw a movie of one once - as it would require a complete new customised grill (hole isn't big enough!) I suspect it was an expensive passtime - probably one of these US ride pimping type people.
