Some skanger has ripped the star from the bonnet of my girlfriend's car. (W124 E220).
Is this a DIY job to replace or is there some complicated attachment system involved ? Haven't really looked at it yet.

Roughly how much does this emblem cost from a dealer ? I'm thinking better off going to Mercman or somewhere.

Thanks

Those on ebay at £12 + postage make me chuckle, they only cost about £13 from the stealership.

And at least the one from the dealer will be OEM, the last one I got from ebay, before I knew what they cost, started to corrode very quickly, I suspect it was a cheap copy.

Good Luck,

Richard

Ten months ago my nearest dealership needed £18 + VAT (£21.06). Add the expense of a 40-mile round trip and I was chuckling at eBay too - came in a Mercedes box and cost £12.31 inc p/p.
Had plenty left over for sweeties. Maybe I was just lucky though.

German and Swedish do genuine Merc ones for about £15.

I should know - the shaven headed little pikey kids that live round the corner took three of mine before they got bored and moved on to some other destructive passtime.

Thanks for all the info. There are a few on eBay right now. One guy says he has 94 of them for sale.
Anyway, picked one up at GSF this afternoon for £14, which is cheaper than the eBay prices when you add in the postage.
Now to figure out how to put it on the car.

Looks like the star twists on with help from a 17mm spanner.
Had a look under the bonnet last night with a torch to see about taking the remains of the old one off. How do you get a spanner in there ? Access is a bit limited to say the least. Hope there's not some special Mercedes tool needed.
As it's my girlfriend's car and she's working 12+ hour days, I won't get to the car in daylight until next weekend anyway.

Bonnet star replacement

With a pair of pliers or pipegrips, grip the cap under the spring and pull down against the spring pressure (quite strong), turn anti-clockwise about 90 degrees and it should lock-in to a pair of grooves which will hold it there. Lift out the badge from the top. Replacement is simple reversal.
