Can anybody explain how/why boot descriptors can be seen on either left or right side of boot i.e. C240.
I have seen them on either side??

For a number of reasons i'd imagine, possibly where badges have been nicked and replaced, or the rear of the car has been repaired for some reason and the badges placed incorrectly. I have seen loads of 190's with the 190E badge on the left of the boot and a 2.0 badge on the right of the boot, yet mine hasnt got the 2.0 badge, and theres no evidence of it ever being there.

The Badges are always on the near side of the car without question .  The special engines also get a mention on the off side such as turbodiesel and Komporssor . ( They have a special hand operated press jig for puting them on ) Just in case you are wondering how they manage to put them on streight.

A visit to the factory is amasing , i would recomend it ...

C180 Badge

Hi guys,
Ive just bought my C180 '97 from MB Direct and comes with 12 months warranty etc.
I just realised it doesnt have the C180 badge on the boot. Do you think I should hussle them to replace it for free since it was never there?
Or maybe if I have to pay them.. any approx. on costs.
Thanks.

Like many manufactures Mercedes probably have a "debadged" option - where you pay more money not to have a badge. This was very popular with company car owners who were only allowed basic models and had the debadged option in a vain attempt to hide their status!

The larger the engine the more likely you'll see the badge, I proudly display my E320, but I would not be so sure if I had the E200.

I've always taken the opposite approach and opted for delete-badge on higher spec models, especially when they've had a turbo badge. I don't want everyone to know that I've got a high-spec or powerful model - always thought it more humble and less likely to catch the wrong attention.

Thanks for your replies guys. I was only trying to maintain the originality of my motor. But I'm guessing I'll be without a car for a whole day if the dealer comes and collects it from my home and drops it back.
So to save time and keep the "image", i'll stay with a nice clean boot!
Cheers.

Badge or no Badge

I remember reading an article in a newspaper many years ago about this.
It was about Mercedes giving Germans the option of no Badges on their 5000cc cars because Green People were keying them on the grounds that big engines destroying the Earth.
In Ireland most peope are proud of 'HOW BIG A ONE THEY HAVE GOT' and the 'THOSE WITH SMALL ONES' take the 'debadge option' so people will think they have 'A BIGGER ONE THAN THEY ACTUALLY HAVE'

I must admit the badge thing is a funny one...I don't have any and most people ask what motor is in it....despite the fact that it has all the options..... I think some pople ask deliberately expecting you to sort of apologetically say a little one.....A few owners I know are very sedate drivers and not interested in a big engine and are happy to spend their money on upgraded interiors like leather etc. and accept a lower engine size.

In my youth (post steam) Q cars were all the rage and so much more fun at the traffic light grand prix - sat there in an innocent looking morris 1000 or A30 with a 1760 Xflow engine nestling under the bonnet - those were the days - no speed cameras,no police in the bushes...

so maybe the debadge version works in reverse too and its much easier to polish the boot lid!

I've tried stuffing a cucumber in the boot of my SL but doesnt look any bigger..

In my youf in the 80's, I had a 4 door escort 1.3L - but I put an XR3 engine in and kept the exterior unchanged with slightly wider tyres but no spoiler, standard arches, wheels and trims etc plus that "1.3L" on the back. Speak softly and carry a big stick principle. Used to give the lads with go faster stripes something to think about at the lights

Then again it was even more fun to destroy the real XR's and GTIs with the old man's 380SE ! Outdragging the boy racers in a such a huge car that everyone expected to be driven sedately by an oldie.

My E is debadged, and I guess everyone thinks its an E200 but I'm not bothered enough to ask for a badge. If it was a real fast one (the 240 can hold it's own over a distance but it ain't what you'd call fast), I would probably spec it without a badge as its still great fun wiping the smile off the faces of those who think a spoiler makes their car go better.

There is nothing wrong with base models (the C180 is lovely), but they tend to be a bit underpowered and lower spec - to encourage us to spend a bit more on the bigger models. I guess we all have a bit of snobery in us and dont want to look like we just squeezed in and really should have bought a Ford instead.

Oh and Sue, I guess it's the one thing that we don't do to impress women !- its a bloke mine is bigger than yours thing! Then as Women change their minds so often, we'd be rebadging our cars every 5 minutes to keep up

Arrrrrrgggghhhhhhhhhhh!

I now have a complex. I requested they take off the badges on my slk coz it looks nicer unspoilt and i didnt want people thinking(my word hasn't he got a big engine in such a small car) but now I am thinking people mite think I am a poncy nugget who hasnt got any money and is trying to make his 200 look like a 350 despite the fact the wheels have a huge clue in them. the brakes on 350's are mercedes monikered whereas the 200 hasnt. have dashed off the the stealers and badgered them for a 200 badge. do you think this will help me?

I may have to buy a van instead.

I have a private plate coz I cant be bothered remembering my number. had it for years. does this mean I am shallow?

I once had a ford puma if that helps. and a vauxhall nova. i am regressing

Yup, no badges and a private plate - definately shallow and sad.
Bugger, so am I then.
Do you think the lack of a badge counters the plate, or do they combine to make us even more shallow :?

The E's not girlie is it? - just rusty I suppose. (thought Id get that one in first)
I once had a Lada - the old square one ! Does that make me more or less sad? Replaced it with a 2 door Viva does this help?
I think I better have a lie down....
