Boot Lid Adjustment (W210)

Is it possible to adjust the alignment of the boot lid on a W210?

I ask because after a trip to the airport the other day, I had to lean on the lid to shut it over some suitcases I was carrying. Ever since then it has been very difficult to shut... in fact the catch only grabs when the boot is shut with your hand off-centre by about 12" to the left when pushing down.

Then I noticed that the lid no longer shuts flush with the bodywork where it meets the base of the rear window.

I haven't stripped all the lining out of the boot to have a look yet, but would I be correct in assuming that the hinge bolts simply need to be slackened off slightly for me to re-align the lid?

If anyone has attempted this in the past I would love to hear how easy/difficult it is to do.

When these boot lids are stressed in any way the usually go (off centre). Often had to adjust them. Its the catch that moves off centre and needs adjusting. If you move the lid to almost closed position and look closely the catch will be approx quarter/eighth of an inch out of centre. Quite simple to adjust once you remove the plastic trim, you will see how simple it is.

Further to that post. The 210/211/220/221 all suffer the same problem. When you have to push 12 inch off centre. So take the plastic trim off and see how easy it is to re-align.

Thanks for the suggestion of checking the catch, but what about the fact that the lid seems to be raised slightly out of line with the rear wing near the base of the rear window?

That's what made me think it was the hinge that needed adjusting.

The catch sounds easier to get to, so I will start my investigation there.

I do feel that you may not be able to adjust this via the hinge as it could be strained slightly and may need to be replaced, or it could be that the lid is slightly twisted. looking at the hinge shape if the boot lid is slightly twisted then twisting it in the opposite direction to that that strained it in the first place could solve it. It sounds brutal,but thats what deformed in the first place. the fact that it now sits higher could all be down to the distortion present. very hard to see any height adjustment in the picture and I doubt that anything has moved.

I have come back again on this, I am not having a go at eric , but I can see no point in moving the locking catches as they have not moved and you could end up never getting it right,

Looking at the design of the hinges I do feel sure the if the boot lid was twisted back it would come into line.

As you say the boot latch is now off set to one side and the rear edge is no longer parallel to the back edge of the opening.

With the boot partly open by twisting the boot lid you will see the direction it needs to go, and that is the only way I think to go. If the catch on the lid is too far to the right, by twisting the right side downwards this will move the catch towards the left, and vice versa.

I think the only way to sort this out is get that lining out and have a good nose around.

If it looks possible to slacken a bolt or two and shift it then I will, but otherwise I will try to bend it back.

Perhaps if I re-load the boot with suitcases the opposite way round, then lean on it, it will all be solved :)

For gawds sake don't shut the boot lid with the plastic trim removed - I did and had a bugger of a job getting the thing to open, due I must say to the manual lock getting 'stuck' sorry but I can't help on your alighnment prob. http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/images/smilies/icon_redface.gif
