Boot lid warning light gone crazy

240CLK 2004. On a long journey last week started to get intermittent red warning (very large and impressive) on the speedo about the boot lid being open. Checked it immediately and frequently but boot obviously closed. It's still happening sometimes except now it's also doing it whilst sitting in the driveway locked and of course it fires the alarm because the car thinks that the boot lid is being opened. Then I fiddle with the lock and open and shut the boot and it corrects - then it comes back again another day! Red light on door boot lid switch is on when this happens so it is receiving a false signal.
Tried to look at lock mechanism but couldn't get plastic cover off - took out the two screws and it moves sideways but won't come off - any advice?
Anybody know what's happening? Thanks

Check the light switch, it faulty, so you boot light is on all the time and may drain off your battery. The light switch which spring back when you open the boot and closes when you close the boot.

It doubt it will be that ^^^

The micro switch on the boot lock is probably a bit sticky. You need to remove the lining on the lid to access the lock.

Wow quick response. Got access to lock and took it apart as far as I could. Didn't get access to the microswitch but gave it a sqirt of WD40 for good measure. Put it back - all working but time will tell.
From the look of it I will have to get a new lock assembly if this continues or is there a way in to the microswitch?

WD40 is not good in micro switches,, looking at the micro switch where the plastic button under the arm goes does to operate it, you can hold down the button with a needle or thin blade and squirt some electronic switch cleaner in,it does not matter how much but easy to do,,from Maplins (non drying)
