For some reason I cannot get into my boot on a 1984 280SL. The vacuum seems to be working as I can hear it release but the button won't catch. I had same problem a couple of days ago but managed to release with the key after a short drive to filling station. Yesterday, I tried key and managed to turn it from horizontal to vertical (Locked?) but not back again.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I think the boot should open by key even if the vacuum is not working - so that may not be the problem anyway.

However, it is possible that the vacuum noises you are hearing are from the pump or the filler cap. If it does turn out to be a vacuum problem, then fitting a new element to the boot lock is pretty straightforward. I think the part is a pretty generic MB unit at about £15 - that is certainly the case for the W126 SE.

Thanks Guys, I think that you were right, Malcolm, that it was the fuel lock that I heard. Andy, I will try the WD40 tomorrow. I went to MB dealership today and they said that it would cost 2 hours @ £75/hr to fix but suggested that I maybe able to get it fixed on my AA membership or at least a cheaper referral.

Here's hoping, I am really concerned that if I get a flat, I can't get to the spare and all the bits for my other hobby (boats) are in the boot.

It was the one on the Brentford Road in West London.

They also quoted me £150 for replacement seat cover (back rest bit, not seat bit).
