The passenger side boot lid spring has totally sheared off, broken in the centre. I have sourced a new hinge with spring but the wrong side. I wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to how to remove the spring from my new hinge and how to stretch it to fit on the existing hinge. I understand there is a tool available but it is discontinued? Any help would be appreciated. Regards Spressy

Thanks for your reply, I assume the exercise would do me good!
The problem is the springs are very strong and I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same problem and found a solution, other than using the tool.
(Part No: 220 589 02 63 00) I believe this is the item number. Hang trunk lid spring around hinge lever (1)_1.jpg

I have fitted a few of these, and not had an issue. Do make sure that the hinged pivoting bit (labelled 2) is free to pivot, I have a lot that have been siezed. Once free, it can be moved closer to allow it to be hooked on.

Indeed as above - make sure they are free to move. The hinges get a tiny bit rusty to slow things down. Some plus gas on all the hinges to free up then some grease.

Done mine a few years ago. Made the world of difference boot flips up like a jack in the box. Its one of those things you done notice getting worse over the years.

The solution may be on the w220 wiki. a great website for owners

Dear Mioba and AMF,
Thank you for your advice. I just needed someone to confirm that it was feasible to fit or remove the spring without the tool.
Will give it try!
Regards Pressy.
