Bornite colours

I have a 124 e220 1994 which I bought in 1997. I have always thought that the bumper inserts were a different shade of Bornite from the lower panels which in turn are a different shade to the main body.However due to scuff marks I recently left it with my local paint shop and was disappointed when I found the inserts the same Bornite as the body. Am I right in thinking that the inserts were originally a third colour or had they been painted a different shade before I purchased the car? Any expert out there who can satisfy my curiousity?

Not absolutely certain but I thought the bumper trim was a darker shade to the main bumper on my silver 202.

From new the surround on the bumper was the same colour as the lower panels, and the face of the bumper black, though when I resprayed mine I did them blue to match the side panels
