Has anyone had problems with Bosal exhausts on a 190?

I had a front pipe replaced recently and the noise was awful. Nasty resonant metallic clatter which only seems to manifest at certain speeds, or with the engine under a certain amount of load. But REALLY nasty - i.e. you certainly wouldn't buy a car that sounded like it.

I took it back and complained and they've just replaced it but although the new pipe is slightly better, the same horrible resonance is there.

There was a slight splutter from the old pipe which was obviously on its way out, but the new one is very much worse!

Could there be another cause or are BOSAL exhausts really that bad? (If they are all as bad as this I can't see how they could be in business though...)

I don't know whether to just scrap the new exhaust and buy a genuine one or what. Nonetheless for E176.00 I'm not impressed!

I have heard of this before...

I think the resonance is caused because the walls of the downpipe are much thinner than the OEM article.

The best thing to do is fit the genuine article I am affaid.

I've never had any good experience with anything other than original exhausts. MB labour rates are expensive but original parts are not, considering that an original exhaust will easily last 10 years or more (compared to 1, if you're lucky, with a Kwick Fix special).

Timax are v good, i have also had problems with bosal. I dont agree with needing dealer parts for an exhaust. Timax are exactly the same and better than mercedes. I cant remember who makes the MB ones, it might even be timax.

The original MB exhausts are mostly made by Erberspacher.

TIMAX, on the otherhand, is a UK company, part of the TI group, I believe.

IMHO, you cannot beat the original, but then it depends on how much longer you plan to keep your car.

Interesting..my own exhaust at the front end is making a din, will have to look tomorrow and see which section exactly. Sounds like an expensive job.

Mike.
