Due to the corroding state of the original 16" wheels on my C240 (W203) I replaced them with a set of 16" Boss XTS alloys, using the 'old' Continental tyres which still have pleanty of tread left on them. Unfortunately, this has caused a noticeble vibration and pulsing which I can feel through both the steering wheel & seat; this is more noticeable the higher the speed from approx 60mph onwards. I have subsequently had the spigots replaced and the wheels re-balanced but the problem persists; the only improvement I have managed to effect is by increasing the tyre pressue to the maximum designated in the handbook, and this appears to have reduced the vibration. I could get the old wheels refurbished but I like the look of the new ones (if not the actual ride).

If anyone has experienced the same kind of problem I would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks.

I'm guessing that you have balanced the wheels. Are you sure that the wheels are centred onto the hubs? If the wheels are not a perfect fit onto the hubs even though the wheel nuts line up they will vibrate badly.

One more thing before you change the wheels, MB hubs have a flange on them making the hub concentric, this means that the wheel bolts do not center the wheel on the hub, what ever wheels you have, they nust be made for MB otherwise you will be worse off than before

I've had the wheels balanced twice on two different systems and the company that fitted them have replaced the rear spigots, which I understand are there for there to center the wheels on the hubs; I take you point however, that if they are not spot on the vibration will still be evident. I think you have confirmend my suspicions that a referb of the OE wheels will probably be the only way to cure this problem.

Many thanks for your help.

The best place in the UK is Pristine Wheels in Northampton, MB and BMW use them, you can arange to take the car there in the morning, and pick it up in the evening, and spend a wonderful day in Milton Keynes.
