Hi,
Just purchased a 1992 230TE with 107,000 miles on the clock. I got it for what I though was a good price and was told the rear shockers needed changing, and with no knowledge of the self leveling on the estates I just assumed a relatively easy cheap job. When I discovered the £150 each for the shocks I thought I'd do a bit of research, and scanning through the postings I've got a feeling it's not the shocks but something else in the system. My symptoms are not a hard ride from the rear but almost like there are no shock absorbers at all, I get many bounces from one pot hole. Reading through the postings, the sphere's seem to be the most likely on the list but if the membraine has gone and there's no gas to compress wouldn't I get a rock hard sports car feel rather than a bouncy castle?

I tried the loading the boot up and turning on the engine and nothing discernable happened. Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm willing to bet your spheres have failed - they have a finite life (around 100k miles) and will give the symptoms you describe. The "shocks" aren't really shocks at all and pretty much the only way they can fail is that they start leaking.

Changing the spheres on a W124 is an arse of a job but perfectly possible for the reasonably competant (or incredibly stubborn and resourceful) DIY mechanic and will cost about £150 for the pair.

If you'd like a link to a "how to" written with the considerable benefit of hindsight, drop me a line and I'll send it to you.
