I have always used Tesco 'home brew' diesel. Recently, I have changed to BP Ultimate Diesel, for no other reason than to 'give it a go'.

I haven't noticed any difference whatsoever - or is there more going on beneath the bonnet?

The question is: Am I wasting my money, in buying BP Ultimate?

Over to you guys..................

We have had this question before, some say it is better and some do not, short of doing a test under laboratory conditions, is there an answer to this

I moved over to Ultimate unleaded in my 200k & was impressed with the better performance I got. So I now use Ultimate Diesel in RR & also feel a positive difference from standard fuel. When I travel & Ultimate isn't available I notice the difference, subtle but just not as smooth/responsive (that's when I add Miller's to the regular fuel & then the difference is definitely noticeable.) Got into the habit of sticking with the premium stuff & never used tesco so couldn't comment on the comparison. Around £2to£3 extra per fillup but I think there's a plus side for that although never studied it scientifically

I didn't realise this had been asked before, sorry!

Laboratory conditions can 'prove' things either way. I'm just wondering what the general feeling was amongst the Forum members if they thought the extra expense is justified?

Has anyone ever stripped an engine (obviously, not just for the sake of it!) and noticed any difference between Ultimate and supermarket 'home brew'?

I also suggested changing to Ultimate to my sister for her new A class & she said she noticed a definite improvement over the Tesco fuel she had been using. After the recent debacle with a bad batch of Tesco fuel causing damage I wouldn't touch it

I buy the cheapest diesel I can get, I would be down about 3 - 5MPG and less performance compared with a quality diesel like Shell or BP. I've heard it called Euro diesel, but there is a big difference in diesels...

Cheers

I always used supermarket petrol (except Tesco of course) and have recently changed to BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power. I really can't say that I've noticed any difference but I'm sure there must be something going on under the bonnet as they say there is. If I don't see any difference soon I may change back.

Helen,

I'm with you, since the Tesco scare I have changed, but have found no discernable difference, apart from the price. Will give it another month or so and decide then.

Tried all the premium fuels and i've not noticed any difference at all, i usually put in whatever is nearby and every 5th tankfull put a pot of millers in to keep the injectors clean.

i've got a '99 C250 turbo diesel;)

Ihave used some 'super diesel' before from BP and didn't notice the difference, now i run on vegetable oil at 100% and when i switch between diesel and veg the difference is unnoticable, this was proven when on the way to scotland at the beginning of the year i forgot to switch to veg and so emptied the small startup tank of diesel on the motorway! which led to a 3 hour wait for the aa to tow me to a fuel station, grr

Well even on the petrol side, there is always the feeling that the car runs better

My experience with a 1990 Rover 216gsi put me off supermarket fuels for life.
After the recent experiences in the SE I'm surprised that any one uses Supermarket Fuel anymore.............why buy an expensive refined motor car and then run it on low quality fuel?
I would say that anyone changing to premium quality fuel should allow 2-3k miles, plus use a dose of fuel injector cleaner to start with before expecting an improvement........

My Chimaera would grumble at anything less than Shell Optimax.

Tried it in both petrol and diesel. Absolutely no difference whatsoever. Any performance improvement could be explained by the placebo effect and there is no evidence of any change on the trip computer.
But, Optimax does contain good detergents etc (same stuff that they put in redex and Millers I assume) so I use once every 3-4 fill ups to keep the fuel system clean.

Interested to read the WHATCAR? trials of various fuels. Commuting often between Cheshire and Edinburgh, I have experimented using differing types of petrol in my SL500 W129, and have never noticed changes in performance or consumption. It would be nice to know if the claims of cleaner engines stand up when using premium cost fuel. I notice JEZ.ML270 is also curious about this point.
