Just today I got a warning about Brake Assist. Is this just the computer going stupid again? Later I went out again, and no warning. Is the car just too damn complicated?

I had the same trouble a few months ago. it turned out to be a loose brake light buld in the rear of the car that caused it. i know it seems strange but all my mechanic did was remove the bulbs and refit them again. i havent seen the problem since.

ABS warning lights - perfect excuse for a small rant

When I had a similar problem in my C250TD, the local Mercedes dealer charged me £17 to tell me that the brake servo needed replacing at a cost of £520. This struck me as claptrap, since I'd had a similar problem in a Honda which turned out to be a faulty light bulb. My wife took it to another Mercedes dealer, who replaced a brake light switch at a cost of £81.

Moral: if you take the car to a dealer who say's it's a big, expensive job, and you think they're talking piffle, go somewhere else!!

PS I wrote to the first dealer, asking for my £17 back since they obviously hadn't done the diagnosis properly. Two reminders later they wrote saying they wouldn't refund the money, but would give me £17 off the next service. Since the labour charges seem to be plucked out of thin air, this didn't strike me as being a worthwhile offer. I now have the car serviced by an independent.

They're part of a local group which has all the Mercedes dealerships within about 50 miles, so guess who won't be buying another Merc when it's time for a new car?? If they'd just said sorry, and given me my £17 back, then they wouldn't have lost the servicing fees, and they'd probably have eventually sold me a new car. The capacity of businesses to shoot themselves in the foot never fails to amaze me.

Rant over.

its always the brake lamp switch faulty fault code 1200, plug the hht (hand held tester) in and it will tell you the fault, a job for the dealer or your specialist
