The brakes discs on my Merc are rusting very badly which looks unsightly. Im not talking about the silver plate itself but the grey metal surround that the wheels attach to. The vehicle is just over 3 years old and is approved used with warranty and the usual rust warranty. Ive been onto MB to discuss replacement who have politely told me where to go. Does any one know if I have a case for replacement im not talking about due to wear and tear but defectrive parts due to rust?? thankyou

the issue is whether they are defective

if they still work ok, and the rust is just a surface problem, then I think they have you cold. I know when I fitted some new calipers a few years ago to my Beemer, they looked all lovely and shiny and new, but within a year had got that brake-dust-surface rust patina which is hard to shift. They worked just fine for the next 4 years though.
One answer is to dismount the wheels, wire brush all the rust off, maybe sand it back to bare metal and either paint it with a high temp paint or protect it with a high temp laquer. A lot of work but good results.

I'm afraid the only solution is to paint them yourself as I do. Silver Hammerite is good for this. Obviously don't paint the braking surfaces. Incidentally I do the calipers as well, the results are quite pleasing.

Agreed - if its the cast hub, they all look like that. It maybe because of the alloys you have that you can see it whereas normally this would be covered up by the wheel.

I've noticed mine look the rusty too (03 C240). You're right, it's a bit unsightly but they work ok. Didn't notice this on my previous car (Audi) ....

As everyone say rusty brake disc are normal as Myros and Malcolm 210 says just clean them and spray with Hammerite, all of my cars are done this way and look good.

i prefer the look of hammerite smooth silver. seems to make a better job. i did the rears on mine and also the wheel bolts ends. the acidic wheel cleaner caused them to rust. they look new again now.

Smooth silver hammerite for me, done it on all my cars from new and they clean easy and look better than rust. Just make sure you dont paint the face of the disc/hub as this could cause wheel loosening over a period of time, this should be a interfeirance fit. Just put a slight bit of copper slip around the centre lip to prevent the alloy corroading with the metal disc as this can make it pretty hard to get the wheel off.

i'm lazy (and havnt enough time)

but thought i'd chip in, i scrape the obvious rust off with a wirebrush, then spray dust off with an air compressor then spray on Linseed oil yearly which is environmentally friendly and cheap

heres a photo of that part BEFORE cleaning (didnt do a great job either, and this is a second hand car so the rust got there before i got to it)

and heres the same wheel brake disc shield after spraying and a bit of cleaning

http://anyweb.kicks-ass.net/personal/me/mycar/newcar/brake_discs/img_3419.html

now that i look at those pics i realise i need to do something with them this summer again, this time i'll try and get more of the rust off, so much to do so little time....

cheers
