I have a low rumbling sound occasionally under braking. I have inspected my pads and they appear to be OK (only 8k since last changed) Could this be the disks.

The car was laid up for 3 months earlier this year as I could not get it off the path due to building work and since then everything appears to be going wrong!

If its the disks are they easy to change? Also presently I have solid disks what real advantage is there for a small mileage user to have vented disks?

Another topic - Reading many threads recently there is a lot of talk about different types of members/owners using the forums and how they use them. Having been a member of the VW Type 2 Owners Club and the BSA Owners Club they both dissolved in to a 'post bag' of more about who was using the Clubs and who should not than offering good quality advice and information. Result many members including myself eventually left quietly and did not renew our membership.

It would be a great pity if this went the same way. Personally I would rather there be a separate Forum for the more light hearted threads however live and let live and lets show some respect for those less knowledgeable than others (esp me!)

Thanks

Peter

If left stationary for a long time, discs will begin to rust and what you might be hearing could be an effect of the rusty surface. However, if so, it should disappear after some use. If your discs are not visibly rusted or corroded, then the problem may be wheel bearings or something else.

But, if your discs have not been checked for a while, it may be good to take them off for inspection and possibly replacement.

It's a relatively easy job and should not take more than a couple of hours, even if you've never done it before.

Vented discs have the benefit of better cooling and so should be more fade resitant after repetative, hard use. However, you will need to see if your calipers are wide enough to accept them. Possibly, the vented discs for your model of car may also be of a different diameter to the non-vented ones. If you decide to go that route you should check the part numbers and compatability with your local dealer's parts dept.
