I have just replaced my front brake pads with a new set of ATE pads and new sensors. Used copper grease on the contact points on the rear of the pads and where they slide on the caliper. I noticed that the sensors on the old pads had already been worn into but I had no indication on the dashboard that this was the case. I just checked the remaining pad depth. At what point do the sensors cut in? And can I check they work?

With the single wire system the disc would have to wear through the plastic on the pin to let the brass inner contact makes contact with the disc.

On the later 2 wire system the disc would need to wear through the contacts so the they go open circuit (light on all of the time)

You always have up to 1k miles left with normal driving

you can check they work by just touching some metal with the metalic end of the sensor tip (after you have pulled the sensor out from the pad itself).

Test both in turn and get someone to look at the the dash when the ignition is on.
