HI, I have an S320 Cdi W221 2007 , is there any issues I should look out for when changing brake pads, it has electrical hand brakes and ABS, and do I need a code reader to disable any components. thanks for any help.

Steering wheel service menu will give you options to put rear calipers into service position. You fail to say if front or rear .

That's cool. Last time I did rear pads on a car with an electric hand break I had to take the motors off the calipers and wind in the activator (or whatever it's called).

Pretty straightforward tbh . Just like any other brand of car . Pop out the slider pins if any and clean and lube with white lithium rubber friendly grease.

Handbrake system is separate to braking system ( it has its own motor) so no need to do anything when just changing the brake pads.
I disagree. In order to change the brake pads you need to push the pistons out ( the new pads are thicker than the old ). For cars with electric hand / parking brakes, you need to unwind the actuator to force the pistons further apart.

But this is only relevant for vehicles with electric hand / parking brakes.

Hand brake system is a separate drum system within the disk so you can move the pistons in the caliper for the disk brake without issue.

Discs with electric handbrake don t use handbrake shoes . They share the same pads within a caliper . My GLC doesn't have handbrake shoes , nor does it share the drum ,as it's a different design totally. Just for clarification :)

I know what you mean though . Lol

Icarsoft scanners also let you put the handbrake into service position.

Not on the 221 s class. Totally different from calliper operated handbrake systems. Here you go, @onefortheroad, @Northernsands, not the same. Other models differ but the op is talking about his 221.

It reminds me of the time when brake shoes were the norm before disc brakes came along, not to sure about the procedure for disabling the electronic mechanism, can one do it from the steering wheel buttons. ??

Not on a 221 or 216, motor needs to be put in service position by OBD scanner.

Adjustment is critical as well, otherwise you get a lot of expensive graunching noises when operating the parking brake. Been there, done that on my 216
