Your Mercedes
1999 280 SL
I have horrendous brake squeal on the last few feet of braking and have been told that it is because there is a lip on the discs as a result of non mercedes pads being fitted before I bought the car. Apparently there is 70% life left in pads and discs!

The squeal is truly embarrassing as well as being annoying but I am told the only option is new discs and pads front and rear for £600. Does this make sense, any cheaper options? I am in Watford, herts.

Thanks

I have a feeling you're being 'flanneled'.
My route would be to have the discs re-ground at a machine shop, and refit the pads with some anti-squeal compound on the back. If you can't DIY, simple job for any indie garage.
Cheers, Tom.

Sounds like utter b*ll*cks I had mintex pads fitted to my SL320 for 20K and it never did a bit of damage. try searching for break sqeal there was a good thread that explains it better but there is some grease that needs to be put on the backs of the pads or something like that.

The groove is perfectly normal, all disks do it, by the way if you want genuine disks and bads call MB Truro ask for Mark and quote this site he will do you a very good deal :) about £250 should cover the whole set :) good luck
