I have just bought a 1999 S320 and the thing in the dashboard keeps telling me the brakes need replacing. Anyway, I took it to have the brakes replaced but they were new according to the workshop and dont need replacing. So I am guessing either something needs to be reset to tell the on board computer that the brakes have been replaced or the sensors are wrong or both.

Could anyone in the know please give me some pointers.

PS Very happy with the car.

lovely car, you need to have the sensor wires checked for open curcuit as they break where they bend and coming out of the inner wing inserts!

There are 2 types of sensor in use.

If a single sensor, then one is shorting to ground.

If two wire sensor then one is open circuit

Thanks for the advice, German Swedish and French have the sensors at only £1 + VAT each. I'll just get somebody to put them on since I have saved so much not having to have the brakes done.

that sounds like the pad sensors for that price, what you need is the wiring loom from the sensor to the main harness where it plugs into the cars loom!!

Unless someone has fitted pads with sensors that have worn through,, if he pulls the sensors out of the pads and the light goes off then that will be that,,if the light stays on then the wires as you say

but they would need to be touching a earth point, even if the sensors are worn, if the pads are good then there wouldn't be any live to earth action! hate to dis-agree with you Malc but there got-to-be a contact to earth to put the light on!

No we are not dis-agreeing, its just that I have seen sensors fitted where the plastic has worn through exposing the brass pin, and an easy check

Thanks for your advice guys. It appears the previous owner had new pads fitted but didnt get the brake pad sensors changed thus causing the problem. I have had new ones fitted and all is now OK.
