SLK 2000 3200 manual
Hi, I have an SLK 320 which I bought after it had been off the road for 4 years. It had ben MOT'd and basically was OK. After having the timing reset to factory settings and reeplaced the tyres I can now say it is briiliant. Now I have been offered a 2000 year SLK 2.0 which has stood since the engine blew 4 tears ago. I am thinking of having a used engine fitted if the costing is right. Any views? and what else should I be wary of.

Hello and welcome

Do it

Rust is the biggest issue with R170’s unfortunately

Thanks Blobcat. It's coming from a friend who has said front wheel arches are bubbling but where else should I look?

Rear wheel arches, sills, suspension hangers, anywhere there is metal... :(

I will move it on as I have enough cars already but I just don't like cars going to the scrap yard which will be it's fate if not rescued (her indoors has said)

I suppose it comes down to the new second hand engine cost then . Hopefully you can avoid expensive rust repairs

I'm wondering if it would be worth putting in the 230k engine rather than keeping to the 200.? More performance and no more cost l would suggest, and maybe an easy conversion.?

Welcome I would be looking towards a 171 about a 2004 one. Those are galvanised.

Sonic, think you mean an R171 from 2004 - and yes, they are galvanised where the R170 is not. The R172 is rather later - my 2008 R171 is one of the first facelift R171's! IIRC the R172 is about 2012 on until they re-labelled the SLK as the SLC. However, the R171 is not immune to rust, IIRC there are reports of rear subframe rust problems on the R171, plus the engine problems on early V6 petrols.

Yes you are correct 171. Our first 171 was a 2004 SLK200K, had no problems in 90K miles.
