I own an E230 1998 .As i came of the motorway the car was driving fine.I drove 2miles on and came to roadworks .As i went over a ramp i heard a loud bang and then the car started to scrape the ground. as i got out i looked and the car was almost in two halves. All that was holding it together was the roof. The car is cleen and tidy and no sign of rust.Is this a problem on this model. The car is now scrap.

You can not be seriously asking if this is a design fault.

I would doubt that it is scrap ! You need to find someone that does cut and shut properly and will put it back together and then through a special MOT made for cars that have had excessive crash repairs. Indeed if it is done correctly the car can come out stronger than a normal car. Its just the clowns that are doing it on the cheap that give it a bad name :)

A story of two halves...

Definately a cut and shut. Probably best you found out now and not as the result of an accident. If you bought privately - then not much you can do.

Thanks for your comments I am now going to pop rivet it together.
Will this be stronger than welding.I will use stainless rivets so they won't rust. This way i will not burn interior with welding.

SL500, i probably should have firstly given you condolences for your loss. My apologies. Are you thinking of fixing the vehicle yourself? I don't know much about the cut and shut system you have over there but i would have thought you could take some legal action against whoever did the job or sold you the car?

Rivets? Wont they show? A good adhesive such as Solvite (the wall paper adhesive - you've seen the adverts!) would do a neater job surely?

Seriously though can't you get the scum who sold you the car?
