My one and only transponder key is broken within the ignition barrel.
Whilst I can still start and stop the engine with the remainder of the stub, I obviously cannot engage the immobiliser.
I want to remove the barrel and replace it with another set (about £20 off Ebay), rather than the expense and delay of using MB dealership.
My question is : How do I remove the barrel?
The van is a Sprinter 308cdi '03 reg.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks for PDF Malcolm - you're a Godsend! Never believed I could get this accurate information so quickly. As soon as I can obtain a replacement barrel and key, I'll be tackling the job.
Once again many thanks.

There is no way to code an MB key, no one has done it as of yet

Broken key in ignition barrel

Hi all, new to the forum having just bought an '03 Sprinter 311 CDI.

I have exactly the same problem as "herbertcustard", with a broken ignition key still stuck in the barrel. Although the van still starts and runs using the other half of the key, I'd like to get this fixed.

"Television" would it be possible for you to forward me the details you sent to "herbertcustard" for how to remove the ignition barrel? My van's VIN number is: WDB9036632R477051

Related question ...
I understand only the current (broken) key will disable the van's immobiliser. So if I replace the existing ignition barrel with a new one, would I have any issues starting/running the vehicle with the new key, provided I keep the broken key on my key-ring to continue to disable the immobiliser?
Alternatively, what would I need to do to get new key(s) programmed to disable the immobiliser (assuming this is possible) and how much is that likely to cost (presumably at a MB dealers)?

Appreciate any help with this.

Thanks,

Hi Dec,

The key does not support central locking. So no fob as such. The broken part I have on the key-ring has a fairly flat black moulded plastic body with "SILCA ITALY" written on one side and "YM1515" written on the other. Probably a re-cut key from the original? This any further help?

Cheers, Ian

There was a guy very recently broke his key too, he managed to hook it out of the lock, with I think a paper clip, he then got a key cut from both broken halves. If you cant fish the broken halve out then you can remove the lock barrel, you will then be able to push the broken halve of the key out the back of the lock barrel so all you should need is a key of ebay, you will then need to transfer the transponder chip from the old to the new key, I think the transponder is housed in a slot on the key handle??? Big thanks Dec. Your links to the pics for removing the ignition barrel are perfect. I'll give this a shot tomorrow. Yep, my broken key is just like the one in your previous post. Had not even noticed it had a cover containing the transponder for the immobiliser. So one I have the broken bit out I'll invest in a re-cut ebay special and ... job done. Hopefully.

Thanks again. Forums are brilliant! But it's always down to those taking the time to share their knowledge and experience. Which is very much appreciated.

Cheers, Ian
