Hello! I recently posted a thread about my Mercedes e220 from 2012, it does have by telephony but no bt audio.
I took it to the dealership and they told me that I have audio 50 and that they probably can do the firmware update but there is a chance that the command sistem might “fry” as it might get entirely unusable and it might need to get replaced if this is the case. They took my car to do an engine coding I had to do and told me that they ordered the cd for the firmware update and when it gets to them they’ll call me. What do you think? Should I do the update and take the risk to damage my head unit?

Surely the risk of doing an update is with the dealer not you.

Yes but they said it could damage the head unit and for sure they would make me pay for the replacement..what is your advice?

A firmware update to the head unit will either work or won’t, if it doesn’t and brinks the device then it’s their issue as they are applying and approved update under their guidelines. Unless they are applying an update from a different model and hoping it will work that might be a different case but that should be made fully aware to you before hand.

So if it won’t work then what?
Also I just learned (I don’t know if it is true though) that there are some Mercedes that do not have the COMAND system. The dealer told me that I have Audio-50. Is that a good system or not?
And is it a command system? I read a thread here that was a walkthrough of a guy in the same situation as me and ended up not having to do a firmware update, but to replace the whole unit with a COMAND ntg 4/4.5/4.7 since the audio-50 does not have bt audio or some other features as the ‘COMAND’ does.
I should also point out that I do have navigation, and it does work. No cd/card or external devices needed for the Navi to work..what is this? Can somebody explain to me this audio-20/audio-50/comand thing? Are they the same systems or mine (audio-50) is a bad one?

My understanding is that Audio 50 is not Comand. I think the systems go from Audio 20 (basic), Audio 50 (basic with navigation) and Comand (the full-fat system). I have read somewhere that Audio 50 cannot be upgraded to BT Audio but Comand can. I suspect your dealer doesn't know much about these systems either.

You could call or email https://www.commandonline.co.uk/ with your VIN for a definite answer. They are forum sponsors and well regarded on here. @Alfie may see this and respond.

Edit.... I’ve just read your other post and I’ve never heard of “CONNECT 20 HIGH (NTG7)”. I’m assuming your car is not a UK spec?

How much would it cost me to get a comand system?

Audio 20 and Audio 50 can both be with or without navigation. 20 is usually a single CD and 60 multi CD.

Audio 20 and 50 can both be upgraded to AD2P bluetooth streaming in many cars and in late 2012/13 onwards it is a standard feature. Tends to be the older 2009/10 cars which can't be firmware updated.

I wouldn't change to Comand of the same era as its no better.

It would be cheaper to overlay the Android 10.25" system that you can but and get modern up to date applications. You can then bluetooth directly to the new head unit. Or even just use Android Auto or Apple Carplay.

So I should wait for the dealer to get the cd for the firmware update then?
Maybe when it comes I will ask them if it is for audio 50 or comand.
Is there any problems that the system can have if I have audio-50 and they use the comand update? (I don’t know if it is comand update or not. They just shown me a number and told me that they had to order that cd number from Germany because they don’t have it)

That looks the same as my 212 E350CDI 2012, its got the narrower not full screen. Its an Audio 50 without command, command has the wider screen.
If you look in your glovebox you should find a cable to plug into the base of your phone. That will give you full connectively.

Its not Comand, and a Comand upgrade CD would not work at all.

This is my glove box. I don’t see any cables. Just a hole and in that hole I did not find any cable to pull out. I did not try too hard since I don’t want to break anything. Am I missing anything?

There is a rib connector on the rightsize of my glovebox E class. Comes with 3 cables, iPhone, another, & USB for memory stick.
Have a look in your handbook, even though its a different model I would have thought the set up to be the same.

The hole is there but nothing inside that from the looks of things. I’d say you’ve got standard audio 50 with Nav, I don’t think there is an option for you to upgrade to BT streaming I’m afraid.
I’ll see if I can get a picture of the connection inside my glovebox for you, just so you know what your looking for.

Ok. On the other hand i found this adapter for the port i have in my center console. It has Bluetooth v4 and an USB port. What do you think? Should I buy it? It’s around $35.

Thinking about it, the port you have in your centre console sound like what I have in the glovebox, maybe as the 207 is based on the 204 cassis it’s just a different location.
Any chance of taking a picture of what you have, may help us direct you a bit more
