It seems yet again the government have gone down the path of least resistance and shafted the car user again - have you seen the cost of road tax for cars over 225g/km? £415 from next year, thats over 100% rise:mad::mad::mad:. Am I the only one whos p******d off to the back teeth by this incompetent, robbing government fleecing the motorist yet again????? How many people on here are going to have to seriously consider owning anything bigger than a 2.0 ltr when Bungle, the Labout Chancellor muppet is stealing from the motorist hand over fist. What about taxing aircraft, london taxi cabs, buses and foreign truck drivers who pollute more than all the cars combined!!!!!!!

We can all express our opinion at the next general election.

Personally, I think Blair knew exactly when to cut and run..............

Sweden is lovely. My missus is from the south of Sweden which is nice but Stockholm is a fantastic place. High taxation over there too though.

I guess that your post was at least partially tongue-in-cheek, but if you think taxation rates are high here you're in for a shock with at least the first two potential bolt-holes on your list ;)

Easier said than done... Unless you are minted, trade on-line or retired, you would need an external source of income to support you in those countries.

Cheaper EU options include... Portugal, Spain & Italy or even Croatia is worthy of consideration.

On a slightly different note, is the retrospective increase in VED for post 2001 car's likely to create stronger depreciation for those vehicles, while older cars ( which are still relatively modern) become more sought after? Will newer always be better?

Has anyone else noticed that after every budget, when the motorist is hammered even more than the last time, the BBC always bring on a spokesperson for friends of the earth who says the government are on the right lines but should have hit the motorist harder?

When is anyone going to stick their head above the parapet and stick up for the motorists in this country?

It may affect 2001/2 cars but if you want anything newer you'll have no choice. Like everything else, we'll get used to it and continue to pay. Car taxes are insane in some other countries (Ireland etc) but people still drive. They have to.

Doesn't change the fact that they're thieving, lying squandering scum, but then I don't think they like me either :)

There was the shadow chancellor on the radio last night saying that the only way green taxes work is when they are revenue neutral. Otherwise we just see them as a tax hike (which they are) and a lie (which it is). Hear hear - I just wonder whether that interview will come back to haunt him when out current bunch of liars get their well deserved boot and he's in the hot seat....

Aren't the RAC foundation, SMMT etc supposed to do this?
The problem is that the liberals and lefties in this country have such a hold over the media that anyone who opposes their view is branded a loony - so our lobbying body representative ends up sounding like a member of greenpeace.

They should realise that our opponents will use whatever is available to further their arguments - true, real or not and we have to fight back. Whilst I strongly disagree with their arguments, the US NRA are on the right lines. They say what they believe and to hell with political correctness. It seems to work too. Our guys should come out and say that cars are not that much of a contributor and are improving constantly so lay off and how about these leftie cowards going after a harder target instead. They should also point out that those that go after 4x4 owners are driven by greed, jelousy and envy - not ecology, they're just too dishonest and too far in denial to admit it, even to themselves.

Ok
Anyone want a slightly used soapbox? - I think I've finished with it now

so how much will tax be on a 270 next time then?

ML 270CDI co2 figure is 250G/KM so i guess that makes it the higher tax figure of £425 payable.

Here in Spain, the UK equivalent of road tax costs 123 euros per annum for the ML (about £92)

The mot is only every two years for vehicles under ten years old and costs 45 euros

Insurance is 560 euros (full comp) and includes compulsory breakdown recovery cover

Diesel fuel is currently just over one euro per litre. (about 80p)

So all in all a much cheaper country for the motorist. :D

Expressed opinion is that by the time the election comes around the economy will be in such deep doo doo that Dave and Co. will not be trying too hard to win it . Quote :- an election to loose !

So will the car tax go up on my 1995 CL500??

Not yet....maybe but keep a look out for any flying goal posts.

Don't matter who gets in next time, they'll have just as long snouts as the current crew and be as deep in the trough.

They have to raise more money to throw at whatever lunatic self national destruction crusade is current.

But (in Spain) they can grab your garden to turn it into a road, and make you pay for it too!

That was only happening in the Valencia province of Spain but is now coming to an end as it is in the process of being outlawed via the European courts.
