Hi and welcolm to the Forum. I would first remove the dipstick and smell the oil, does it smell? It shouldent. Secondly remove the oil filler cap and look for rubberization, it looks like a sticky goo, any? Please let me know what you find.:|

If the oil has just been changed, its possible that they were a little clumsy and spilt some, and its run down the block.

How far have you driven the car since the change.

This is also my first thought, one of my old landrovers had a weeping rocker cover and although slight, the tiny amount of oil that got onto the exhaust manifold really gave a strong smell when the engine was working hard. If any oil has been spilt in this area during the service it could be your problem. Also check that your filler cap is seated properly and the dipstick is fully home as these could allow oil or fumes to escape.

Could engine fumes be coming in through the steering column via the boot ( number 660 in the picture) if the boot is damaged or come adrift?

This could possibly be one of the common problems on this range of engines...to check, take the plastic engine cover off...it just clips on. When the cover is off, have you got lots of oil in and around the oil filler cap. If you have it tends to drip down onto the manifold and then burns off, the smell then enters the cabin through the air vents.

The problem is caused by a slight crack in the oil filler neck and is a common problem on these engines. Very easy to change and they cost about £10. Have had this problem on 2 cars with a 320 and a 240 engine. Clean off all of the dripping oil and you should be back to normal.
