I've got a 2000cc year 2000 C-Class V reg, which needed new front discs (and pads) 5 months ago so a local garage duly fitted them. All has been well until recently when going around roundabouts or corners I'm detecting a slight whirring sound - almost as if something like a bearing could be dry or like a tyre rubbing metal, for example.
Does anyone know what might be causing this and what I should be looking for? Could it be a wheel bearing? It seem fine in a straight line.
Many thanks
Barry

Hi,
I would be inclined to look for something simple first.
Check for loose mudflap (if fitted) or loose plastic shroud inside the wheel arch.
Spin the wheel and check for smoothness quietness off the wheel bearing.

As mercman 1 says do check the power steering fluid level too.
Hope its something simple bud, keep us informed on what you find.

Steering Fluid

Thanks one and all for your valued advice. Unfortunately, I've not had time to check it all out yet but favouring the steering fluid level. I did check it yesterday after a ten mile run and the fluid was just level with the second mark up from the bottom of the stick in the 20 degrees zone.
Having looked in my local Halfords, can anyone advise what make of steering fluid I should be buying?

Many thanks again

Barry

Re-my car

I should add that the car has covered just 38,000 miles from new (year 2000) and I've not previously checked the fluid level in the steering.

Hi,
Not sure of the grade oil, but if you are in any doubt buy a litre from MB then you know your 100% right.

I would also check the back plate behind the brake disc, sometimes it is bent slightly when they fit the discs and it rubs slightly usually on full lock. Just bend it away from the disc, usually at the top. Just half an inch or so.

Good luck

I would still put bets on the wheel bearing being on its way out.

Jack it up, grab the wheel top and bottom, hefty tugging alternately top then bottom should reveal no play if its ok.

Yes the wheel bearing could have too much free play, they do not make a noise until speeds of 30 mph are reached

Hello everyone

Mercman hit the button, it was the Power steering fluid. I was quite amazed that such a small amount of fluid could cause that problem. As soon as I had topped it up, the noise went instantly. How re-assuring though that so many good intended friends reply to these questions. I applaud you all and this was a simple fault. Keep up the good work! Regards Barry

what level on the stick?

Hi

I've topped it up so that the level of the fluid is at one mark below the uppermost mark at operating temperature. The sound I tried to describe is no longer there. I presume the level is right?
