Desperate car dealers today stunned experts by launching an extraordinary credit-crunch busting deal - buy one new car and get another completely free.
With car sales plummeting, dealers have been driven to offer a supermarket-style deal of two £20,000 saloons for the price of one in a bid to shift motors from their forecourts.

Mr Empson said prestige German makes such as Mercedes and 4x4s had been hardest hit by the drop in demand and were now being offered at heavy discounts.

BOGOF for cars

Buy One Get One Free (BOGOF) for cars has been alive and well in the USA for at least 3 years now.

I think it started with an oversupply of vehicles (primarily 4x4) as the market was slowing down, en route to the "crunch".

This was then aggravated by the cost of fuel increasing (although to levels we would be delighted to pay) and people in the USA beginning to understand the concept of mpg on a domestic personal level. Again, this impacted most heavily on 4x4s (and motor homes) to the point that they are hard to give away.

A further "problem" is the greatly improved quality and durability of vehicles which, if used sparingly (fuel costs) will last much longer.

So we find ourselves with negative equity in our cars, little prospect of sensible resale, expensive fuel, c**p public transport and a workforce that commutes long distance. Governments of all flavours have supervised the evolution of this situation are now pressing us to get into electric cars with negative NASCAR ratings, for which there will be insufficient electricity or refuelling points any time soon.

Perhaps we should divert energy from protracted election campaigns in the world's greatest democracy and try for a bit of joined up government instead??:confused::confused:
