buying a 200te

hi all i am thinking about getting a 200te j reg. i dont know much about this car and cant find much info either. has anybody got any ideas on the fuel economy and the towing abilities as i have quite a large caravan. also any other advice would be helpful ie things to be looking out for before i buy. thanx very much, dusty.

I've not owned one myself, but by all accounts the 8 valve 200TE is a bit underpowered for towing.

The 200TE is no more economical than a 230TE and the engine struggles to propel the car with any enthusiasm.

For towing, a 6 cylinder car would be more what you're looking for.

I agree, the 8 valve 2 litre is not up to it. If you can afford the fuel, a 300te would be much better, and cost about the same to buy at that sort of age.

I have owned a 200TE for 3 years and I would NOT reccomend it for towing. The 200TE works for people like me that normally travel 1 or 2 up, don't cover many miles a day on the motorway and travel light.

Basically, although I love my 200TE, I would not buy another one. In fact, my next one will be a 280TE or 320TE, I am done with the 4cyl engines!

Two Adults, two kids

and a load area full of holiday kit, definitely making the self-levelling suspension work a bit, all the way to Devon and back from up North in early autumn, at varying speeds, but 70-ish and better where possible, 26mpg from our 300TE.
Not that thirsty really.And it picks its skirts up when you need it to.
