buying a c250 td - help please

Hi all,
New to the forum and new to MB. im thinking of buying a c class 250 diesel
can you tell me what is best buy and which to avoid. Anything to look out for.
I can only afford a 1998 or 99 model at present so any help or advice would be welcome.

From what I can make out although am very much a novice

1/ rust on rims, boot lock and I suppose anywhere.

2/ glow plugs, make sure ignition coil light goes out in a timely fashion less that 5 secs or so.

3/ No dashboard lights while running.

4/ as much of a merc service history as possible with notes about changing oil regularly.

5/ Aircon works well on both passenger and driver side.

I live in south london and the local MERC (not specialist or partner but a merc service shop) said they charge £45 if you can get the vehicle to them. this was Mercedes service in Tooting sw17 london.
