I'm considering buying a 17 year old SL500 which is in excellent condition except for the inside of the boot rim which has pretty severe rust corrosion. Has anyone any advice on this problem? Is it common, or difficult to repair? Any advice on specialist body repairers for this kind of problem?

Buying a Classic Mercedes SL 500

Hi Graham

I get asked a lot about SL'S no matter what the age. Excetp for 129's. These vehicles are prone for rust. Its to do with the technology which was employed in those days for the production vehicles. Any way, I would advise you to get a good specialist who specialises in renovations as there will more corrosion that may be first apparent. Check sills inner and outer, jacking points, all corrosion protection. Youve mentioned the boot, besides the parts you have mentioned there may be problems with the light units which have a seal which may have rotted. Remove the hard top and check underneath for corrosion. Check front windscreen apperture, CHECK EVERY PART OF THIS VEHICLE.Do not take any thing for granted!!!!!
There are plenty of renovation specialists which advertise in the club. If I can be of further service. Then contact me on www.mercedesservicing.com

Good Luck
Andy
