I was shocked to see this on the Honest John webpages. He's the Telegraph's columnist and I've found his data to be spot on. It's not often that you see him say "never buy this car" but the old A-Class has managed it. His assessment of other Mercs is pretty good, close to what we see in the technical forum.

I think you will find pretty near universal condemnation of the reliability of the Mk1 A Class. The new (W169) A Class is a completely different design and current reports from the usual sources suggest it is infinitely better. My own experience of A Class ownership (acquired new in January this year) is that to date nothing has gone wrong - long may it continue!

Wife had one of the first A-Class back in October 1998, an A140 Elegance. Had it for six years and 55,000 miles with no problems at all. Hard ride though!
