So looking at buying my first Mercedes. I am absolutely in love with the mark 4 A Class. I'm quite specific in terms of fuel, engine and trim level. Diesel Automatic, 2.0L and Premium/Premium Plus.

This is quite rare which is fair enough as the car is only 2 years old at most and there doesn't seem to be many on the second hand market. I have seen a few but slightly outwith budget. I have found ONE within budget, but it has done 40,000 miles in two years which concerns me. The price is lower (presumably because of the high mileage).

I'd be getting this on a hire purchase agreement, and likely to try keep it for the full 4/5 years. Assuming all is well when viewing the car, is there any specific reason I should be concerned with the high mileage? Or won't it really matter if the car has been serviced and looked after properly?

Many thanks for your advice.

Hello and welcome,

My eldest has a facelift A Class Diseasal in Premium Plus same age as you're looking at. It's back with Mercedes (again) for Engine Warning Light / AdBlue / NOX / DPF issues it has covered just over 11K miles...

Buy a petrol would be my best advice

Similarly my daughter has an 2018 facelift A180d that has done 22,000 ish Ann hasn’t had a single problem with it. But I would agree with ^Russ^ go for a petrol

Thanks guys.

I cover alot of miles on the motorway so figured Diesel was best but will consider petrol.

Anything I should be concerned about at 40k miles over two years?

40K is nothing, especially if you’re up and down the motorway. My V6 has just gone over 99K and is running beautifully - I also easily achieve 36mpg on long runs.

Petrol is not far behind diesel on mpg now, & petrol is cheaper to buy. The worry with diesel is Euro 6 AddBlue & NOX sensors.
That said we have a 2016 SLC250d which is Euro 6 & have had no problems at all.
40K in 2 years no problems, make sure the price is right for that milage.

I got 21.6 mpg on the trip to Lyme Regis at the weekend, in 5 hours of stop start traffic. I was well pleased with that.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

As above I would go petrol - if not buy from MB and take advantage of their bullet proof warranty - they do have the best cars for resale

As all above^ get the best of both options with a Petrol from MB AND take advantage of their bullet proof warranties. Knowing what I do today about the 'technology packages' added to a DERV exclusively in order to achieve Euro Emissions standards, I can confidently declare that my current car, which I hasten to add has performed flawlessly for the last three Years since bought, will be the very last Diesel I shall ever own as I'm just not comfortable with the feeling of impending doom WHEN and not IF one or more of those flaky, temperamental afterthought, add-on 'technology packages' starts to fail!

Over 15k a year Diesel and under 15k petrol as a rule of thumb.

40k sounds like it has been a rep car and therefore done plenty of motorway miles, check the service history is up to date, at 2yo it needs brake fluid and some filters at the "B" service so make sure that has all been done

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Appreciated. Hopefully I can actually get the car I want and I'm able to stick around and contribute and learn. :D

I went to see the car yesterday, asked for service history and dealer said it's all online and he can't access it there and then but he can tell me it was last serviced at 31k and showed me the screen on his laptop, then I went for a test drive on my own, gave it a good run for 30 minutes and all seemed well.
Couple messages came up on the screen, front right tyre pressure, one for the brake fluid. So clearly needing another service, which they said they would do before any collection.

Car itself is in pretty good condition exterior and interior wise it is excellent shape, but truth be told it could do with a good professional polish on the outside I think as there was some very faint swirl marks on the bonnet. Pretty obvious it's been mostly motorway miles, I can tell even as someone with less experience looking at cars. A couple of stone chips roughly the size of a raisin but nothing I can't fix myself for minimal cost. Tyres are all brand new, but the front right having low pressure could be a potential slow puncture?. My other gripe with it was the back driver side alloy has a small scrape about 3cm on the outer part of the rim, I can only presume this is from when changing tyres? Is this something to be concerned about longer term? It wasn't milking, just look like a scrape. For the price and mileage, the condition I'd say is good.

I did mention all this to the salesman too. I have a quote for finance, which I'm pretty happy with, and based on what I've seen similar mileages go for I think the price and condition is reasonable and said I'd be happy to proceed providing it was serviced and I got to see the full service history before final agreement and all the other usual important stuff.

Yep, so finance all sorted and paid out. Phoned the dealer on Friday and they are supposed to be calling me this afternoon to sort out collection.

Fingers crossed they call soon as I'm getting anxious!
