Hi to all,

Am new to site. Recently bought a 96 C200. Car drives great and temp. on a run sits at a steady 85 deg.or so. A couple of days ago I got stuck in some heavy traffic and the temp guage started to rise. I seem to recall the fan on my old 190 would kick in at about 95 deg or so however the fan never came on. The temperature just kept going up. It must have reached about 110 just below the red line when traffic started moving again. Temp. came right back down to normal and was fine all the way home.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the normal operating temp. is and what may be the problem. Could it be a faulty thermostat?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Duncan

You have a temp transmiter that turns on the electric fan. the fault could be the Relay, fuse, transmiter or fan. quick test is to short out the two cables on the transmiter and the fan should start. If you do not know where these things are I will look it up for you.

You don't have trafic in Sweden, there is just the odd car, and you certainly will not be needing fans for the next 5 months , minus 3 in Stockholm

Sorry for delay but it seems that you have a viscous fan, that is, it has a temperture controled clutch built in to the fan. I am still looking for technical data for the cut in temperture.
For now, make sure the header tank is filled to the correct level, If you are stuck in traffic and temp goes to high, turn the heater on to max, inc fan. I will come back to this in a couple of days.

C200 normal operating temp?

Just bought a 2004 5,000 miles C200 Kompreessor SE
The engine diagnostic light came on almost as i drove it from the Mercedes garage and the engine is idling roughly! I did wonder why someone would get rid of a nearly new car with only 4000 miles on the clock!
Merc said to bring it back in 2 weeks (I hope im not doing damage to the engine during this time!)
The temp gauge is running at around 85 degrees, is this normal?
During normal use you cant see the temp reading on the dash, but it popped up at 85, does that mean its high?

Help!

85 degrees is fine. Henry Royce back in 1912 maintained that 90 was the perfect running temperture for a petrol engine, nothing has changed since then.
Re the limp home mode, sometimes things do go wrong, it does not make it a bad car. Most new members arive on this site when they have a problem.think of the thousands and thousands of Mercs out there in the world
You have a very nice car, soon you will really enjoy it

Hi Duncan

The temperature will fluctuate between 80 - 90 Degrees and will rarely sit rock steady. This is perfectly normal. Overheating, the gauge reading 100 Degrees, could be due to a number of factors: low coolant level, pressure loss or faulty thermostat could be responsible.

I had a viscous coupled fan on my Dolomite Sprint which had an integral clutch. The clutch would slip at high revs reducing power losses produced by the fan blades. Despite clutch slippage there was sufficient air being drawn through the radiator to keep the engine temperature under control. I recall a problem with the clucth mechanism which caused it to slip at low revs causing overheating. The remedy was a simple clutch adjustment.

REGARDS Phil

C200 Normal operating Temp??

I would check the viscous fan. ( wrote this as vicious- which it will be if you get your hand in the way!
With the engine really hot and temperature gauge reading 90+, stop the car and see if you can turn the fan. If you can without also moving the belt and everything besides, then the viscous fan has fanned it last air, and if due for replacement.

A few answer's for you, There are 3 C200's
Early c200's use a electro coupled fan operated by a switch in the water jacket top Turn on temp 100c.

Later car's use a viscous fan, it looks as though the clutch can be bought as a spare part, only snag is!!!!!! radiator out, oil cooler out and so on.

If you want exact info I need version
