Hi all, have been thinking about a c 270 to replace my 96 c 250 d which has just passed 290,000. Are there reliability issues with the c 270 ? what has been your experience, my other choice would be a c 250 td while saving some money, btw what size of fuel tank does the c 270 have thanks j d.

From my point of view 2-3 years ago it was the best there was. I had a manual Avantgarde Estate bought as an ex-demo that I ran for 40k without a single hiccup only losing £6k on a £22k starting price in 2½ years (it had already haemorraged nearly £10k in 8 months of 'demo' usage). Regularly got 50mpg+ and so effortless when cruising. Just replaced it with a 2005 Avantgarde SE auto Estate, lower suspension and bigger alloys change the dynamics but the auto box (even the 'old' 5spd one) is impressive. Did drive a C320CDI and would have sold my granny for it but unfortunately she's dead already so this was a far more cost effective (£10k cheaper) option. Only downside to the auto box is that I now struggle to better 45mpg.

If you look around there are better value for money cars from other manufacturers given the diesel progress but as an all round package this takes some beating. Just be prepared to haggle if you're going the dealer route - loads around so £25/£26k ticket prices actually equate to £22.5/£23k reality if it's an ex demo. If not my old 3yr/50k manual eventually went from MB Main Dealer to auction and was sold for £11.5k so there are some bargains to be had.

Also worth watching the spec on later models as things like auto wipers disappeared.

In response to 2nd question believe it's 60 litres - range between 420 & 600 miles

Thanks for that, had a drive in a 50 k miles c270 auto over weekend and was well impressed, makes my c250 seem a bit agricultural. Would an average of 38 mpg be to much to expect if i went easy on the right foot. jd

I'd hope so - I get average 35.6 on the E270 (75% motorway admittedly) and my right foot has lead in it! I have seen 48 on the motorway taking it steady but 50 remains elusive! With less weight in the C you should have no problem!

I have run a C270 CDI auto since new (October 2001). Mileage is only about 60k but as one of the early SA cars its proved pretty reliable. There have been some recurring problems with noisey front suspension and the stabliser bar bushes have been replaced a couple of times Also has a tendency to consume glow plugs for some reason and the performance dropped off when the air mass meter went at 50k, which I hear is a common problem. The original brake discs need replacement with next pads. It was nice to get a freebee battery earlier this year with the recall - probably due soon anyway. Bodywork no problems, though it is prone to stone chip.

Its a great car, effortless at all times and economical too. 200 mile round trip to Dover was completed yesterday at 50.3mpg cruising at 80 on Mobil One.

Hope that this helps Jack - of its time, I think its the best C class but then I would say that.

My average over the last 2,212 miles is 41.1 mpg. Theres got to be some traffic driving in this but not a great deal so I reckon that your expectations ought to be attainable Jack depending on your driving conditions. However I would say that the mpg looks as though it is improving with the mileage and that Mobil One has been worth something too in this.
