Hi all, thought I would share my recent Comand retrofit with you. I installed one into my C class about a year ago and it is still going strong but I used a loom and GPS antenna from the main dealer which had to be adapted and took a while.
The latest one was fitted to my wife's C class Sports Coupe.
There is much advice online on this subject including part numbers for compatible Comand units plus the bits and pieces necessary to make the install possible.
I picked the unit up off of a certain online auction site and installed it in around an hour including the Aux out for Hil's IPOD.
I must stress this would have taken much longer without a great deal of advice from Alfie who is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to these units, providing parts and advice on such things as gyroscope clips etc.
The adaptor loom made things much easier as all the work can be done with just the existing radio removed along with the air vents, ash tray, radio trim surround and the gear shift trim panel. The adaptor loom was modified using Mercedes pins and loom for the aux out and then the whole issue plugs into the back of the Comand unit. The magnetic GPS antenna was mounted high on the A piller behind the trim.
The only thing left to do is to drop the car into an independant dealer to activate the Comand in the dashboard display.
A worthwhile excercise if you enjoy this sort of thing, the Comand is an excellent unit, the navigation works well and it can only improve a cars saleability if not the resale value as well.
My wife finds it easy to use and would now not be without it given the miles she drives. (lots of brownie points)
Once again a big thank you to Alfie for his help and advice and would recommend him if you want to carry out this install or would like a Comand installed for you.
Paul.
