Can anyone point me in the right direction please? My recently purchased C class 2.155cc diesel (1995 auto) does what I can only describe as shuddering for a second when starting and two seconds when shutting off.
My thought is perhaps an engine or gearbox mounting on the way out or maybe the exhaust thumping gently against part of the underbody.
Before I start crawling around in the dirt is there a problem, perhaps specific to the car, that anyone could suggest ?
TIA

You could well be right regarding the engine mounts....being a diesel they do take a pounding.

You should be able to see the mounts from within the engine bay...are they very compressed or falling to bits?

Maybe the next time you start the car, get somebody else to start it whilst you have a look into the engine bay and that way you should be able to see if the engine lurches about a bit.

Whats the mileage on the car by the way?

If is only on starting and stopping you get the noise i would have a look at the exhaust to see if it is vibrating on something. And as mjtray said take a look at the mounts.

With that sort of mileage, your mounts will be looking a little tired by now.

Many thanks for the above suggestions. I'll get the mounts looked at and report back.

You need to look at the mountings quickly because thats a fast way to lose the exhaust.......costly item too.
