C-Class Estate
Hi all,

I’ve just joined this minute.

Currently considering the purchase of a used diesel C-Class estate.

I’m thinking something like a year 2020-2022.

Are there any particular engines etc that are best avoided? I see there’s a 200d and a 220d.

Mega power isn’t essential, it’ll mainly be driven by my wife.

Current car is BMW 318d with 260k miles on the clock.

All advice is appreciated.

Agreed, at that age of car with a diesel you're looking at one with AdBlue and the associated problems. Personally for a wife's car I'd look considerably older - like an S204 pre-facelift (pre 2011MY), like a C250Cgi if petrol or a C220/250Cdi if diesel, will be a lot cheaper to buy, does not have the AdBlue and NoX sensor problems you'll find on here, downside (if important) is that the satnav system is antiquated and last updated 2018-19 - but at least does not need expensive updates like later versions. Have a good look at the Mercland website or give Jay a call, he's well known and respected as a source of second hand MB's.

Yes, avoid any diesel unless your wife is regularly doing long journeys. Modern emission equipment, which allows the cars to be Euro 6 compliant, doesn't like short journeys. Your old BMW wouldn’t have been a problem because diesel engines didn’t have so much additional technology to keep them clean then.

Best is the C63 followed by the C43, avoid Diesel unless doing 15k plus a year and hybrids

To be mainly driven by wife - personally I would not let my wife out in a 63 or 43, she's heavy footed enough in a C220Cdi!!

Avoid Anything adblue, egr, dpf. And check how much replacement headlights cost, BEFORE writing any cheque.

Save some money and look for a low mile facelift S204 petrol.
A 2010-2014 C200 would suit perfectly.

The only diesel Euro 6 C Class I would consider is one which has been remapped to delete the Adblue system, no one deserves to go through the pain and cost of owning the worst designed emissions system ever made.

@littlebrooklyn on here had a C250Cgi S204 and she and hubby regret selling it. It's a rare beastie, but worth looking for.
It was such a lovely car and yes we do still miss it and I often catch Keith looking wistfully at old pics of it. The guy who owned it after us was so impressed with it that he actually wrote a letter telling us what a great car it was

Very pleased with my MY13 C200 CDI - great power and very good fuel economy plus I can tow my caravan once a year. Has been totally reliable now some of the niggles caused by the prior owners poor servcing have been rectified.
