Hi guys, I am after some advice about which one to buy, the C Class estate PHEV or the E Class diesel hybrid.
Essentially, which one is better in terms of overall fuel efficiency, which has the better range running in electric mode and what problems do I need to look out for?

Do you want to carry an engine you don't need or a battery you don't need? None are great at fuel economy (compared to an equivalent diesel only version)

Only valid reason for a Hybrid is to reduce BIK company car tax... Happy to be proved wrong - haven't been so far... :(

Range wise if you get half of manufacturers figures you're doing well

Bang on, wouldn't touch one unless it was a company car and I have 3 friends that have hybrids through their respective companies and non of them would get one as a private car

My only comment is I wouldn’t buy one and run it outside a MB warranty

As DSK above Toyota and Lexus lead the way if you want a reliable Hybrid/EV

OK, so the hybrids are not a good choice. What would people recommend as a good compromise of fuel efficiency, space and reliability? I am after an estate or SUV up to about GBP15K.
I am after a quality car and it is a toss up between one of these or a Jaguar XF estate.

How many miles are you going to be covering and where are you driving? (Makes a difference for Euro 5 or 6)

Estimate maybe 8000 per annum, normally around where I live but intend to take it abroad once or twice a year.
Which is more reliable, the C class or the E class? I have seen examples of both about the same price.

The E class has always been my choice and best value for money IMO (I’m on my third in 30 years) I wouldn’t be without one it’s so versatile. There are still some low mileage W/S212 E350cdi saloon/estates around MY2012 circa £12-13k

8K - petrol all the way (I'm covering 15K in my V6 3.0 Petrol)

E Class all the way - absolutely best place to sit for hours on end

The only question with MB diesels is the EU5/EU6 toss up. EU6 can be annoying with ad blue issues. If a diesel it has to be the 3.0ltr v6 as it’s tried and tested and a must on larger, heavier cars.

I would also say look at a CLS shooting brake over an E class.

The XF is a nice simple and elegant shape with many happy owners, 300bhp plus from its 3.0ltr diesel and an 8 spd box. The XF seems to be one of the better JLR products.

Enjoy the search.

The CLS is very attractive; I've not owned one but would be very tempted.

I've had a couple of E class estates and had no complaints.

First one has 6 owners and 61K miles... hmmm - worth a check on MOT history - why only 1 picture?

Second one - Just 12K miles in 10 years - I wonder if it's had 10 services... (I doubt it)

C and E Klasse are mostly the same cars with slightly different bits of metal holding the wheels together. The C is 12% ish smaller than the E but that difference is mainly boot space.

If you are only doing 8k per year then why look at hybrid, or diesel at all? Why not look at the petrol offerings? There’s little difference in real fuel consumption.

I would love a 3 litre or thereabouts petrol E class estate, but MB seem to prefer diesel for the E class save for the top of the line engines.

I kind of disagree with the C & E being mostly the same, having driven both for many miles the E is just nicer - difficult to put that "niceness" into words - although I'm sure in your teams you've some scores for it...;)

What I mean is, the technology that goes into both cars is either very similar or just identical (in many cases, eg powertrain, identical). Yes the cars are different and you’re right, the E is more refined than the C, but that gap has somewhat shrunk over the last decade or so.
