Hi

My C320 ( W203 - Elegance ) has done 50,000 now and is just 3 years old and I am very pleased with the car but there are a couple of issues that I need advice on.

1. Basically the suspension feels quite harsh sometimes, but I have never been in another C Class so I cannot compare. It just seems when hitting ( sometimes ) small bumps/potholes etc.. it can be quite hard. It came more to light when I recently rode in a new Vauxhall Vectra which seemed to handle the bumps better than mine. The car went straight through the first MOT so I'm assuming that all is OK. Is the suspension ment to be slightly firmer because of the size/weight of car etc.. ! ? is that C Class suspension in general.. maybe I am just being paranoid.
Also I sometimes hear a knocking type noise from underneath when the front wheels are moving up and down.. e.g travelling down a fairly bump street etc.. It's not a squeak type noise but like a rumble/knocking noise. For instance if I appraoch a speed hump, were both front wheels are lifted at the same time theres no knock, it's when there moving up and down independently of each other. I had a friend check out the front suspension and he thinks it's OK ! ?? could this be coming from the suspension, I'm not sure were to check first.

2. Also, when checking the suspension we rocked the front wheels top to bottom ( one hand on the top of the wheel and one on the bottom when jacked up. Then I pull at the top and push the bottom, and back again etc.. ) there was some slight on play on the wheel but this occured on both front wheels, so again, is this normal.. should this slight play be there....

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jay

It's a long shot but I once had a new Rover 800 Vittesse turbo as a company car, after about 5000 miles I was worried about how stiff the suspension was and how poor the handling was. Went back to a dealer (not the one I got the car from) and they discovered some 'packers' left in the front struts that are used when they transport the cars on a lorry to prevent excessive suspension travel in transit, I suspect Merc pre-delivery is infinately better than Rovers but worth a look !
