Hi there

I test drove a 2016 C Class C220D estate today and was overwhelmed by the amount of extras it had, the only thing that was lacking was the ability to use voice recognition for the phone it worked for everything else but not the phone commands, any idea why and can the ability be retro fitted by a Mercedes dealer

You do need to use the correct terminology, for instance in mine ring Joe Blogs does not work but call Joe Bloggs does.

Or would do if I knew a Joe Bloggs.

That's true, you get a small linguatronic booklet which gives those commands.
My only issue is having an Audi and a Mercedes, both work similarly but the voice commands are subtly different...

I read on another thread that if the car has the Audio 20 system installed it's never going to work is that true?

Latest systems need more memory!

I'm referring to the owner's memory, not the system's.

Years ago I had a Parrot clip on hands-free device. To make a call, I touched it once and the tin voice said, 'Who do you want to call?'
I could say, 'Bloggs' or 'Joe' or ' Bloggie' or anything similar and it would get it right.

Now, you have to remember a whole range of instructions, spoken in exactly the correct way, before the system responds as you want.

That's progress.

I have been told by the dealer that it will never do what I want and that the car needs a different audio system

Lingutronic in Mercedes is a bit 'fickle' to say the least, one might say you have to speak in a posh upper lip manner and enter the names properly, no short names. ;-)

For example, both my friend and my other half's name begin with 'J' so I can't say 'call J' as it'll bring up every contact beginning with 'J'.

Hopefully things have come a long way since then.

I read on another thread that if the car has the Audio 20 system installed it's never going to work is that true?

there should be no reason it shouldn't. Unless your phones not compatible which I highly doubt.

I have been told by the dealer that it will never do what I want and that the car needs a different audio system

COMAND, that's what they're referring too and to me that sounds like a chance to 'up-sell' if you know what I mean.

Speak to COMAND-online, they're quite active on here and can advise better.

Hi

My 2014 C250 estate has the Audio 20, which as your dealer has said, does not have voice command for the phone. If the latest version is like mine, the only voice command is for the sat nav.

My previous 2010 S204 had Command, which was pretty good (except for the Satnav's lack of full post code).

As I purchased mine second hand (18 months old) and I liked everything else about the car, it was a compromise I made. If I was buying new, I would definately opt for the Command system.

Regards
Phil
