Hi guys, a mate of mine has a C180 W203 when he starts up from cold the engine revs up and down for about 20 secs then settles down. He fitted a new MAF couple of weeks ago (the 3rd one) and the engine management light came on again after 20 odd miles, he's done this 3 times, he's had the fault code read and it says MAF gone to earth now ok, this seems to happen everytime he fits a new MAF.The cars seems to run ok but the management light is still on!

Anyone got any bright ideas?

Seems unlikely that it could be the MAF even though they are not genuine bosch cos this has happened with 3 MAF's now all bought from different sources

Cheers guys

Phil

The MAF hardly ever puts the lamp on with an MB this will be the O2 sensor that has done this.

I will not comment on none genuine MAFs as they do not last long

If your buying and fitting genuine MAF's from mercedes or bosch agents then there is something else wrong with the car, if the MAF are from ebay or second hand then its still the MAF.

thanks guys for the answers, from what i can gather one came from ebay, that lasted over a year the others i'm not sure where he got them from but the last one although not bosch came with a 3 year guarantee, seems a bit unlikely that 3 would be faulty from the word go doesnt it. I'll pass your answers on then its up to him, what does an o2 sensor cost?

I think you need to look at the MAF again, none genuine MAF's dont work in the same spec as the originals.

Search MAF's on this forum.

MAF problems

Hi all,
Just had a new MAF on my W203 C200K at MB. 20 miles later, light back on and intermitent revs back again. It has now gone back to MB for the third time in as many weeks.

Is this a common problem (revs go up and down and tick over has hick-up now and again) The engine does not quite stall but feels likje it would.

Regards,

sounds like you have oil in the wiring loom due to a cam sensor leaking, if thats the case im surpised they didnt pick it up!! other poss is beather valve blocked which throws oil into the air pipes putting oil on the airmass sensor!

Hey Bud!

Try to diagnose the onboard computer on your merc using the electronic diagnostic machine. If your mate only installed the new MAF the old fault code is still registered in the merc onboard comp. Try reset it using the diagnostic machine.

Cheers,

Ronnie

Hi Guys!

I have C180 2005 model. My car experinced almost the same with intermittent idle and light on. The mechanic manage to solve this problem by openning the exhaust manifold, cleaned the connections and return the manifold air tigthened, reset the car onboard comp and the car runs perfect.

different engine in your c class bud, your engine is 271, as opposed to 111,
your engine suffers from poor valve seating issues, replaced many heads on the 271 engine in the dealer,

as said earlier, probably oil in loom which has got as far as throttle valve. ,
also as mentioned earlier this should really have been found, but ive also said many dealers are useless, hope you find problem bud,,
