Hi all,

My car has started to make a whirring noise when cruising at 30-40 MPH (Just audable over the radio). It can be heard easier at 30-40 mph but cannot be heard above 45-50. It is not engine related as does not change with revs, even put autobox in neutral and still get the whirring noise. It is quite quiet but perhaps a bearing going.

It does seem to be on one side, seems to be at the front somewhere but no sure

Any ideas or costs

cheers

Wheel bearing will do this, to test jack the front and slowly rotate the wheel If you can detect or feel the balls as you lightly turn the wheel then the bearing has gone, they are very easy to change

The noise does not appear to be on any side, my original posting was incorrect

With a wheel bearing by opening each side window in turn sometimes helps, but it takes a trained ear to detect

could this be the small cooling fan in the light assembly above his head ? weren't there reports of that causing noise on some models ?

The noise reduces as I slow down then nothing when still.

More audiable when cruising at 30- 40mph, You can hear it when braking as you slow down at round abouts etc

Not notible when on the motor way

Wheel bearings when gone sound like you are running on very coarse tread tyres that start humming at a certain speed and road

my last gearbox had the same noise untill it failed ,drive along a long wall or crash barrier so the noise reflects,i did that for a rear wheel bearing and it was actually the front one, noises are difficult to pin piont ,alancee
