I have a C180 but the battery is flat, when I disconnect the battery to charge it there is a small alarm that goes off at the front of the car. I cannot get this to turn off, I have tried locking the car and unlocking it before removing the battery.. no difference. Anyone know?

Well its the factory fitted alarm system of that year, which is 1996. C180 Classic

Alternatively, can I charge the battery without disconnecting it from the car?

Dont see why not, dont have the ignition on though and keep your keys in your pocket.

internal battery on the siren, alarm assumes the battery power has been tampered with.

You should be able to turn off using a special key, there is a rubber cap on the back of the unit covering the keyswitch.
You can charge your battery without removing it provided you do not have anything electrical running e.g. switch off courtesy lights etc. the only other constant consumption will be the clock which is negligible.
Check if you have a Merc battery as this has a vent tube to the outside of the boot. If not leave the boot lid ajar to ventilate and do not approach using any naked lights, cigarettes etc. batteries on charge can produce flammable gas, hydrogen if I remember correctly
