Hello i have a 1995 c180 and the alternator on the car is putting 14 45 volts into the battery when the car is running at idle, the battery reading is 12 66 volts without the car running and if i put the lights on with the car running it is 14 26 volts, the c180 i have has no air con and the haynes manual says my car should have a 40/70amp alternator but it has the45/90amp alternator, the 90amp is proberly the better one so i would like to keep it, i want to change the voltage regulator which i can get, but what i would like to ask is, on the alternator it says 14 volts, does this mean it will charge up to 14 volts when driving, or have i got the wrong alternator fitted on the car and i need to replace the alternator rather than just the voltage regulator, thankyou

To me your car sounds normal, in fact it is exactly what it should both running and off.

Why do you want to change the reg pack. There is a part number on the reg.

I thought the same but didn't want to be the first to say it in case I was wrong! How spineless of me!

Lucky you - your alternator gives full output at idle.
I would take a guess and say that because it is a high output alt, it can run a beefier field and thus produce full voltage at slow speed.

thanks

THANKYOU i thought because it was charging over 14 volts it was to high, in the haynes manual it says it should not be over 14 volts so i thought i needed a voltage regulator, the reason i checked is i had a burning sort of smell , it smelt like a electric motor burning out, the smell has now gone i think the smell was coming from the battery, the plastic breather pipe had come off so the fumes were on the inside rarther than the outside where they should be. thanks again

If you are in doubt, change it. they only cost £18 from any Bosch dealer, held on with 2 screws, number on the unit.
