C180 Blown headlight bulb?

Hi Guys,

My GF has a '96 C180. The driver's side dipped beam headlight stopped working the other day, so I changed the bulb, but to no avail. Thinking I may have bought a duff bulb, I went and got another one, but when I installed it, that one didn't work either. I checked the fuse, which was ok (I swapped it to the passenger side circuit, and it worked fine). I've changed the headlamp bulbs before, and never come accross this problem.

Am I missing something? If it's not the bulb or the fuse, what is stopping the headlight from working? Is there perhaps a relay I need to check somewhere? Can someone help out a merc noob?

Check the wires with a test light to see if you have power at them,also make sure the earth wire is ok...

Cheers for the reply Nicky. Assuming there is no power but the earth is ok, what sort of cause should I be looking for?

If you have power at the wires and the earth is ok then it is down to the bulb....

Ah well-at least I know I haven't missed anything obvious. Cheers mate.

If you have replaced the bulb already and the problem remains, then it's not the bulb.

If you want to make double sure, use the known good bulb from the other side.


There is only one earth for the main and dipped beam, if the main beam is working then it's not the earth.
