Hi,

Has anyone ever had this with the 2001 Coupe? I was washing my car the other day with the alarm on and there is a very quiet but audible beeping coming from the engine. Its not air escaping and its not inside the car or anything. Its actually coming from the engine. I thought it might be the sensor or something for movement so i turned the alarm off and it still happened. The beeping comes on for a few seconds and stops and then starts again its rather intermittent and doesnt happen all the time.

I rang the local garage about it and the mechanic had never heard about it. Im worried it might be something to do with the immobiliser or something that might make me break down?

Any suggestions or experience of this?

Thanks
Jemma

Hi Jemma

When you say 'local garage' were you referring to a MB garage? I doubt a non-franchised garage would have heard of this curious condition unless they had experienced it for themselves.

Can you be more specific as to where in the engine bay the sound is eminating? Is there a pattern to the beeps? I suppose you are certain it is the car and not something inside it that may have been forgotten such as a mobile phone running low on battery power? How loud/quiet is the beeping?

Do you have a radio with a removable control panel? They will usually bleep as a reminder when the ignition is switched off? Is it this kind of beep sound?

You mention the alarm being on when the beeping occurs. Do you hear the beeping when the alarm is off? If you are washing the car when you hear it, could it be a motion sensor partially activating? I assume your car behaves impeccably on the road?

I'm afraid you will need to be more precise as to location unless another member has encountered this peculiar problem before and can help you.

You could inquire at a MB dealership but if they offer to investigate the beeping for you, you could find yourself parting with a lot of money.

REGARDS Phil

I've caught my E class doing it too. Quiet continuous beep, almost a whistle, doesn't happen every time and I could only hear it if parked in the garage. I couldn't trace it either but I'm not convinced that its anything to worry about. With the number of electronic gizmos and associated cooling fans in the engine bay I figured it was probably normal and I've had no other symptoms.
