Lift up or push down the gear knob and it will go further across and go into reverse. you are proberly just selecting 1st.

A lesson learned, indeed :(

Not sure about the mechanical jiggery pokery you need information about, but someone will be along soon to advise.

I hope you got your MB for a song - those with 'wiggly sticks' are not as 'desirable' as auto's.

the reverse is enabled by pulling the gear stick right UP and moving it back (left) at the same time, easy when you know, and it should be marked on your gear stick unless you've had yours replaced with an aftermarket one.

If you find the gear stick too stiff, shove it into first, second, third gear, then try again as above, stiff gear sticks in the w202 usually means too much or too little oil in the gear box (can't remember which)

and I wouldnt call the W202 crap at all, it's a GREAT car, one of mercedes most reliables, the lack of a handbrake is great, how else do you think you can rest your arm there happily between the two chairs (assuming you have the arm rest)

cheers

That's a tad unfair isn't it.?

perhaps but how do you buy a car without at least driving it round a bit so you know you can live with it's quirks?
In any case, even as an auto driver, reversing a manual up a hill isn't that hard - into reverse, clutch up and once she starts to move back a bit, release the handbrake, then it's down to basic clutch control. Even an auto driver like me could manage it!
And as Anyweb rightly says - the 202 is a fantastic car. One of the best.

I have been driving autos for a long time. My wifes car is a 'wiggly stick' manual - which I drive occasionaly. I agree with you, that hill starts are not difficult - despite a bit more 'revvy' noises and foot juggling than I am used to. Its just practice and getting used to it.

Patience alpdddd, I'm surprised at some of these posts, members are not usually so "in yer face". I once had a C180 manual and on my first hill start I was in all sorts of bother with the brake and I don't think I'm stupid. You do get used to them but I'll say again as I have said all along, that foot/handbrake's a non-ergonomic (i.e. rubbish) design concept.

No need for that!

I have always found this forum to be friendly and informative.

Tongue in cheek comments are frequent, and totally acceptable.

The comment to*ser is not!!

I would hope that you apologise. If not, there is no place for you on this forum.

I can think back to times when I have got stuck doing something like this, and you end up getting nearer to disaster all the time. It normal in a strange car and in a tight situation

The whole concept of the park footbrake/hand release is primarily designed to be used in conjunction with an auto box. Therefore no foot acrobatics required.
When this method of brake sytem is used with a manual box it becomes something of a farce having to juggle two feet, three pedals, one handbrake release, one gear lever AND possibly the steering wheel to get a smooth hill start.
Which is one of the lesser reasons why auto is nearly always specified in current MB cars.
