hi

thought I would tell everyone the following story, I have a 1997 C180 model ,background to this story, slipped a disc on my back and was in that much pain had to visit casualty dept on Sun morn , wife and I went into car and I started to drive to hosp, on the way the exhaust started getting noisy, got to hospital 6 miles away exhaust very loud, On way home I came to a very difficult decision , due to my back in agony I would have to visit the first Kwik Fit garage that i came across for them to investigate , the mechanic took car onto ramp and shouted me over and pointed to the flange ( where the 2 parts of the exhaust clamp together ) and told me that the flange was corroded with rust and the joint was now loose, he told me that I would need a full exhaust roughly £600 but come this way and we can check on computer, computer brought up £552 and manager decided to bring it down to £430............... I decided not to take up this wonderful offer and drive the car home.................on way out the mechanic whispered to me that he could fix the exhaust but manager wont let him , dont buy an exhaust he said it can be fixed...............managers policy is not to repair exhausts

3 miles up the road was a smaller kwik fit, I drove car in and asked the guy in there if he repaired the exhaust flange as mines was corroded, he said I can but i,m short handed today and rushed off my feet, he then suggested for me to leave the car and when he has a quiet spell he will look at it, 2 hrs later he phoned me to say thats the car ready and exhaust fixed, I asked him how much the bill was and he laughed and said I,m not charging for removing a clamp and replacing one , when i collected the car he showed me the repair and wow superb as it was , he also took the time in explaining to me when the time comes to buy an exhaust dont let them con you into buying a whole shystem and then can adapt the clamp he put on , what a guy , he even refused to accept any money at all

Good news, that is my problem with all those types of establishment, like good Ferengi they are only interested in profit. I hunt out the smaller specialised places for a few reasons. It will most likely be cheaper, you are not just another punter and the money stays in the area.
I dealt with loads of automotive chains in Canada and they smile at you as they rip you off. They know that there are millions of other customers so if they lose you it makes no difference at all.

Glad to see everybody isn't a crook. Great story. I deal with local "Budget" exhaust place (which is owned by Kwik-Fit) in Dumfries and the lads are excellent.
