Recently bought a C180 Estate, 1998 model with Automatic. I know fuel economy is subjective but what mileage should I expect from a full tank around town and for open road driving.

Eamonn - the fuel returns will vary widely depending on the amount of town driving or motorway driving you do [obvious I know, but worth saying I guess!]. The 1.8 needs to work hard to carry the 'C' along, especially in auto format. The 1.8 is a far better unit than the 1.8 in the 190 E 1.8 so you should expect around 25 - 28mpg around town or 35 - 37 mpg on a steady motorway run, with an average of 29 - 31. The auto's can be reasonably frugal but they do not like hard acceleration or town driving.

I agree, I have recently bought a 1998 C180 and in mixed running I get between 29 and 31 mpg. I haven't done much Motorway yet but I would expect a bit higher on long runs

Thank's to all respondants.

I seem to be getting about 30 mpg on a run and onley about 17 mpg in town, and that's without a heavy foot ! Maybe I should get her checked out ?

17 MPG around town does not sound normal. My own 190 does better at about 22 - 24 mpg around town and up to about 35 on a run, averaging out at around 28 - 29. Our C180 is more frugal than the 190. Maybe the fuel injection needs re-setting - I tend to lean mine back a little to give a bit more mpg.

My C200 Auto does over 30 on a motorway run which i don't do that often and around town which is most of my mileage I get 21/22 mpg

There must be something going on here! My C180 Auto does approx. 430 miles on a full tank, which in basic maths equates to around 35 to and from work, going up to 40+mpg on motorway runs.

If I only got 30mpg she'd have to go I'm afraid for an oil burner

Thank's for the input's.
On my last tank I got 205 miles for 49.5 litres thats about 18 mpg on town driving. From the posts here it seems that that is unusual. I've booked her in for a check up in the NY. I think I'll use my wife's A-Class in the meantime and use the money saved to support my own Christmas Drinking !!!
